Local Taxes Department mulls over change in by-laws

KARACHI (July 17 2010): Local Taxes Department of City Government Karachi has decided to open separate accounts for seven different heads of revenue income. In a meeting of the officers of Local Taxes Department chaired by acting EDO Local Taxes, Masood Alam change of by laws, increase in advertisement fees and devolution of powers on town level were also considered.

Earlier deputy directors of towns informed about their performance. It was decided to open separate accounts for various heads of income including mobile publicity and billboards so that the performance of the concerned recovery officer could be evaluated and monitored on daily basis.

Addressing the meeting, EDO Masood Alam said that all concerned departments must follow the policy of administrator Karachi regarding achievement of revenue targets. He said that the revenue departments held much importance and if the officers pay attention on it, the city government can earn Rs 10 million daily.

The EDO said that the previous policy could also be amended if it was felt necessary for increase in the revenue. He asked the department to give its suggestions on it. The officers viewed that the decentralisation of sanctioning authority for advertisement could make ways for further increase in the revenue at town level. Therefore, they said that the sanctioning powers for advertisements should be transferred on town level.

The meeting decided to consider this suggestion in detail and to prepare a final report on the change of by laws for recovery of annual fees on quarterly basis. It was also informed in the meeting that the removal of iron sheets on the billboards has saved the human life in case of any causality during monsoon
